Description

Angry Kid is a Ukrainian independent game studio, founded by Andriy Bychkovskyi, that is making video games with a focus on unique mechanics and experience.

History

Hobbyist time

Before getting into the industry Andriy Bychkovskyi had few gamedev related hobbies. First, it was simple editing of famous Counter-Strike 1.6 mods for local servers. Then in cooperation with Yuri Malczewski, they made a full standalone mode called Rubaka Mod. It was a unique blend of Capture the Flag with Team Fortress-like Classes system. Mode got some recognition from the players, and even few tournaments were held. After CS 1.6 completely lost its popularity, Andriy Bychkovskyi started playing a simple flash game called HaxBall and later ended up organizing Ukrainian league for this game.

Company establishment & Undervault

After dropping out of university, and then working for 1 year in a small gamedev company called "Twigames", Andriy Bychkovskyi decided that he is ready to abandon everything and follow his dream of making indie games. So in November 2016 "Angry Kid" was born. Andriy thought that the best first project would be to rework a small roguelike prototype, that he made during gamejam, into a full game - Undervault. Originally the plan was to get it done in 3-4 month. But it took almost 1 year to complete, because of the lack of experience and limited resources (Undervault was done in solo). The game was released, and even despite completely failed marketing, it got some attention and made some money. The biggest achievement at that time was selection to Google Play Indie Games Contest final.

Things are getting more serious

After the release of Undervault lot of things happened. Andriy got some recognition in local gamedev community which helped to gather a team to work on a new title - Pixel Express (railroad management simulator). Also, Andriy found a contract programming job at "Flaming Fowl Studio" which helped him to earn some money and to get insights on how real, commercial games are made by industry professionals. At the same time, Andriy got a chance to visit different gamedev conferences across the world (including famous GDC) and met a lot of great industry people, all thanks to various scholarships and contests. In April 2019 Andriy decided to quit a contract job, and focus completely on growing a company and developing own games.
